I've updated the article that I originally wrote to showcase how F.lux can be used to protect your vision. However, there are clearer instructions included on how to get it working on KDE without requiring the gnome-settings-daemon which is a dependency for the GUI tool. I've tested it on a Debian Squeeze installation and it seems to work there.
