Using KDE and Gnome at the same time!

I don't mean just having KDE and Gnome installed at the same time, but actually using them simultaneously (if this will ever be useful remains to be seen). So without further ado let me tell you or rather show you how to use both KDE and gnome at the same time! You'll see something like the below screenshot. I've tested this using an Ubuntu Lucid installation but it should technically work in other distros as well.

Step 1: Install Gnome shell
Gnome shell is probably available on your package manager. For users of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS it isn't so straightforward (you'll get some funny errors), but this is easily remedied with a few commands.

Command 1: sudo apt-get build-dep gnome-shell
This will install the dependencies required.

Command 2: sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Step 2: Log into KDE.
You should have both KDE and gnome installed on the same system. If you've got both of then installed, just log out and then log into KDE.

Step 3: Enter Gnome shell
This is where the weird stuff starts. You're going to enter gnome shell whilst you are in the KDE desktop. Press alt-f2 and type in "gnome-shell --replace" (without the quotation marks) with gutso.

Step 4: Exit Gnome Shell
Just when you've entered gnome shell, exit it by pressing alt+f2 and typing in debugexit.

Step 5:Replace Compiz with Kwin
You already have both KDE and gnome but it works a bit better when you replace compiz with Kwin (the KDE window manager). Just press alt+f2 and type in kwin--replace.
Edit: If alt+f2 does not work, opening a terminal and typing this command works as well.

Step 6: Additional stuff
You probably wouldn't want the KDE panel underneath the gnome panel. Just switch the screen edge to the side like I have done. You might also want to add a spacer above the K menu so that is it not buried below the Gnome menu. When you want to exit, simply logout and login again. If you ever find a use for using KDE and Gnome together please let me know.

Have fun!
