Recover your files on Windows using Recuva

How can you recover important files that have made it past your recycle bin? Pulling your hair, stomping your feet and screaming might help you to alleviate your tension but in the end it won't do you any good. What will help you is a simple program that will recover your data.

Recuva is a free file recovering program available for Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, XP and 2000. Installation is your typical Windows installation. The download link for Recuva is provided below. After the download is finished, it's just a matter of clicking on next, next, next finish.

We will subject Recuva to a little test to show you how this handy program works. Here, I have two files, present in a folder located in My Documents. I will delete these files "permanently" and then proceed to recover them with Recuva.

After deleting the files, let us start up Recuva.

A Wizard greets you when you start this program. From then onwards, you only need to enter a few details, which will help Recuva to recover your files.
As the list of deleted files will be quite large, you can filter which files to search for before starting the search. For this test it is best to select other as we are recovering a .txt file and a .odt file.
You can further narrow your results by specifying where the files originally were. Afterwards, you can start the search. It is interesting to note that Recuva can also search on a media card such as a USB stick or an iPod.

After the scan, Recuva only managed to find one of the files, maybe because the .txt file was 0 KB and was promptly overwritten in the hard drive. This file was unrecoverable only because it had already been overwritten by something else. However, as I looked through the list of deleted files, a substantial number of files were recoverable and a general trend was present, which indicated that the larger the file, the higher the chance of it being recoverable. You can see below how the larger files were all in an excellent condition to be recovered. Scrolling downwards, I found that if your file happens to be larger than 500 KB (which is quite small nowadays), you may have a very good chance of recovering your file.

Recuva is not a magic tool that can save you from your carelessness 100% of the time. If you have lost an important file, it is definitely worth a try. If the file happens to be large, your chances of recovering your file may be higher. All in all, I hope that this article might help you someday when you accidentally delete a very important file.
