A visually stunning presentation can make a great impression on your audience. Here are some guidelines to follow in order to create a presentation that can set your presentation apart from the average. Here is a presentation that I've created and we shall use this as an example.
Tip 1: Don't use a template
Everyone uses templates and everyone sees these templates every time they open their presentation programs. Most of them are just swirly lines anyway. Your audience will immediately recognize the template. You can create something much better without the use of a template. Be original.
Besides from being original the absence of a template gives you whitespace. Your audience will be able to focus much better on the contents of the slide when it isn't surrounded by something else.
However, a background colour gradient can work quite well.
Tip 2: Use Consistent fonts
Notice that the font styles and sizes have been kept consistent on the example presentation. The size of the font should not impair readability. I've used size 28 for the titles and size 20 for the content. If you keep these sizes, then automatically, your audience will focus on the content
Tip 3: Alignment
Consistent alignment goes a long way in making your presentation look clean. You will notice that the edges of the content shapes are aligned with the right side of the title and the dividing line. If the content box is small, then centering it shape will achieve a good effect as well. The vertical space between the heading and content is also kept constant.
Tip 4: The tool align and distribute
If you have several shapes, you can arrange them quite well using the align and distribute tool. You can see how the objects in my presentation are evenly spaces and aligned. Try, it. It makes a difference. I will be writing another article highlighting how to use this tool if you are not familiar with it but do give it a try.
Tip 5: Static boxes.
You will notice that once you change a slide, some parts of the slide do not change their position. The effect of this is that once you change a slide, only the contents will change. You won't see boxes moving around. Therefore, you are only highlighting the change in content.
Tip 6: A note on animations
Animations can be quite distracting. Unless you are using an animation for a real purpose, it's best not to add it in at all. I find that the appear animation is useful when you are making one point after another.
I haven't found a use for slide transitions yet. The transitions that you see in the presentation aren't present in the actual presentation but the online service that I used added these effects in.
Tip 7: The audience should know where the presentation is going.
Unless you really want to surprise your audience, it's good to show them where your presentation is going. You could either have a slide in which you show what you will be talking about or you can use the technique that I have used.
There you go, following these simple tips will give your presentation a visual upgrade and impress your viewers as well. Have these tips been useful for you? Please let me know.
